Laser Hair Removal Treatment Pre & Post Treatment Instructions

PRE-TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS

Please follow these guidelines to ensure the safest treatment and best possible results:

  • Avoid Sun Exposure: Avoid prolonged sun exposure, tanning beds, and self-tanners for at least 1–2 weeks prior to treatment. Tanned skin increases the risk of irritation and pigmentation changes.
  • Shaving: Shave the treatment area 24 hours before your appointment. The skin should be clean-shaven with no visible hair on the surface.
  • Avoid Waxing/Plucking: Do not wax, tweeze, thread, or use depilatory creams for at least 3–4 weeks before treatment. The laser targets the hair follicle, which must be intact.
  • Avoid Irritating Products: Discontinue retinoids, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and other exfoliating or active skincare products 3–5 days prior to treatment (especially in facial areas).
  • Avoid Other Skin Treatments: Do not have chemical peels, waxing, or other laser treatments in the treatment area for 1–2 weeks prior to treatment.
  • Cold Sore History: If you have a history of cold sores (herpes simplex), please notify your provider prior to treatment.
  • Photosensitizing Medications: Inform your provider if you are taking medications that increase sensitivity to light, including certain antibiotics, acne medications, or herbal supplements.
  • Medical History: Please inform your provider of any significant medical history, allergies, medications, or recent procedures prior to treatment.
  • Arrive with Clean Skin: Please arrive with clean skin free of makeup, lotions, deodorant, sunscreen, or oils in the treatment area.

POST-TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS

  • Expected Effects: Mild redness, warmth, or slight swelling around the hair follicles (often described as “goosebump” or “sunburn-like” skin) is normal and typically resolves within a few hours to 1–2 days.
  • Sun Protection: Avoid direct sun exposure and use a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen daily for at least 1–2 weeks after treatment, especially on exposed areas.
  • Gentle Skincare: Use gentle cleansers and moisturizers for 24–48 hours after treatment. Avoid retinoids, exfoliants, acids, and other active skincare products during this time.
  • Avoid Heat & Exercise: Avoid saunas, hot tubs, steam rooms, hot yoga, and strenuous exercise for 24–48 hours after treatment.
  • No Picking or Scratching: Do not scratch or pick at treated follicles, even if slight bumps or shedding occur.
  • Shedding Phase: Treated hairs will typically begin to shed over 1–3 weeks. This may look like hair is still growing, but it is part of the natural shedding process.
  • Shaving After Treatment: You may shave between treatments if needed, but avoid waxing, tweezing, or threading.
  • Hair Reduction Timeline: Results develop gradually over a series of treatments, as hair grows in different cycles. Multiple sessions are required for optimal reduction.
  • Pain Relief: Mild discomfort is normal during treatment but typically does not require medication afterward. Tylenol® (acetaminophen) may be used if needed.

  • Pain Relief: Tylenol® (acetaminophen) may be used if needed for discomfort. Avoid unnecessary anti-inflammatory medications unless directed by your provider, as inflammation is part of the collagen-building process.
  • Treatment Series: A series of 3–6 treatments spaced approximately 4–6 weeks apart is often recommended for optimal improvement in texture, tone, acne scars, fine lines, and overall skin quality.
  • Contact the Office Immediately If You Experience: Excessive swelling, worsening redness, signs of infection, blistering, severe pain, or any unexpected reaction.

  • Comfort Options: Pronox® (laughing gas) is available if needed during treatment. Most patients tolerate treatment well, and it is safe to drive after receiving Pronox®.
  • Treatment Sensation: Morpheus8® can be moderately uncomfortable due to the depth of the microneedling and radiofrequency energy. Individual pain tolerance varies, and multiple comfort measures will be provided during treatment.
  • Cold Sore History: If you have a history of cold sores (herpes simplex), please notify your provider prior to treatment, as preventative antiviral medication may be recommended.
  • Medical History: Please inform your provider of any significant medical history, allergies, medications, implanted devices, recent procedures, active acne breakouts, infections, or skin conditions prior to treatment.
  • Pregnancy/Breastfeeding: Please inform your provider if you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.

POST-TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS

  • Expected Downtime: Redness, warmth, swelling, and mild tenderness are normal and expected following treatment. Redness is typically most noticeable during the first 24–48 hours.
  • Do Not Wash Your Face: Wait at least 4–6 hours after treatment, or as directed by your provider, before cleansing the treated area. If growth factors, PRP, exosomes, or specialty serums were applied, allow them to remain on the skin for several hours to maximize absorption and benefit.
  • First 24–48 Hours: Avoid makeup, strenuous exercise, excessive sweating, saunas, hot tubs, steam rooms, and direct sun exposure.

  • Body Areas Heal More Slowly: Neck and body areas (including arms, abdomen, and legs) generally take longer to heal than the face. Redness and uneven texture may persist longer in these areas.
  • Avoid Picking or Scrubbing: Do not pick, scratch, exfoliate, or scrub the treated skin while healing.
  • Pain Relief: Tylenol® (acetaminophen), Advil® (ibuprofen), or antihistamines may be used as needed for discomfort or swelling. We recommend Allegra®, Claritin®, or Zyrtec® during the day, and Benadryl® at night if additional relief is needed.

  • Avoid Blood-Thinning Medications & Supplements: If approved by your healthcare provider, avoid non-essential blood-thinning medications and supplements such as aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil®, Motrin®), Vitamin E, Fish Oil, Ginkgo Biloba, flaxseed, and similar products for 5–7 days before treatment. Do not discontinue prescribed medications without consulting your physician.
  • Avoid Alcohol & Dehydration: Avoid alcohol for 24–48 hours prior to treatment, as it may affect hydration status and increase bruising risk.

  • Contact the Office Immediately If You Experience: Severe redness, blistering, burns, persistent swelling, or any unexpected reaction.

  • Avoid Aspirin & Blood-Thinning Supplements: If approved by your healthcare provider, stop taking aspirin and non-essential blood-thinning supplements such as Vitamin E, Fish Oil, Ginkgo Biloba, flaxseed, and similar supplements for 5–7 days before treatment. Do not discontinue prescribed medications without consulting your physician.

  • Avoid Other Skin Treatments: Avoid chemical peels, laser treatments, waxing, dermaplaning, tanning, and other exfoliating procedures in the treatment area for 2–4 weeks before treatment.
  • Pain Management: Consider taking Tylenol® (acetaminophen) and/or Advil® (ibuprofen) 30–60 minutes before your appointment if appropriate for you. Topical numbing cream will be applied approximately 1–2 hours prior to treatment for comfort.

  • Sun Protection: Avoid prolonged sun exposure for 1–2 weeks after treatment. Wear a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen daily and reapply as needed when outdoors to help prevent hyperpigmentation and protect healing skin.

  • Avoid Blood-Thinning Supplements: If approved by your healthcare provider, avoid non-essential anti-inflammatory medications and blood-thinning supplements (Vitamin E, Fish Oil, Ginkgo Biloba, etc.) for 48 hours before treatment. Do not discontinue prescribed medications without consulting your physician.
  • Photosensitizing Medications: Inform your provider if you are taking medications that increase sensitivity to light, including certain antibiotics, acne medications, or herbal supplements.
  • Cold Sore History: If you have a history of cold sores (herpes simplex), please notify your provider prior to treatment, as preventative antiviral medication may be recommended.
  • Pregnancy/Breastfeeding: Please inform your provider if you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.

  • Arrive with Clean Skin: Please arrive with clean skin free of makeup, lotions, sunscreen, or self-tanner whenever possible.
  • Medical History: Please inform your provider of any significant medical history, allergies, medications, or recent procedures prior to treatment.

POST-TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS

  • Expected Downtime: Your skin may feel warm and sunburn-like for the first 24 hours. Mild swelling is common during the first 24–48 hours and is often more noticeable in the morning. After 2–3 days, the skin may feel dry, rough, or tight. Light peeling and flaking typically begin within 5–7 days as the skin heals.

  • Pain Relief & Swelling Management: Tylenol® (acetaminophen) or Advil® (ibuprofen) may be used for discomfort if appropriate for you. To help reduce swelling, consider taking a daytime antihistamine such as Claritin®, Zyrtec®, or Allegra®, and Benadryl® at bedtime if tolerated.

  • Avoid Blood-Thinning Medications & Supplements: Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil®, Motrin®), fish oil, flaxseed, and other blood-thinning medications or supplements for at least 72 hours prior to treatment, if medically appropriate. Do not discontinue prescribed medications without consulting your physician.

  • Nutrition & Hydration: Eat a light meal before your appointment and stay well hydrated.
  • Medical History: Please inform your provider of any significant medical history, allergies, medications, or prior procedures before treatment.
  • Comfort Options: Pronox® (nitrous oxide) may be used during treatment if desired. If you feel you may require prescription medication for comfort, this must be arranged prior to your appointment.
  • Transportation (If Sedation Used): If prescription sedatives are used, you must arrange transportation home, as drowsiness may occur.
  • Clothing: Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing on the day of your procedure, especially if a compression garment will be worn afterward.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING TREATMENT

  • Numbing: The treatment area will be numbed using injectable lidocaine with or without epinephrine. You may feel brief stinging with the injections, followed by numbness, swelling, and tingling as the area becomes fully anesthetized.
  • Comfort During Procedure: Once numb, discomfort is minimal. Pronox® is available to help you relax if needed.
  • Treatment Duration: The procedure typically lasts approximately 2 hours depending on the treatment area.

POST-TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS

    • Always place a barrier (cloth) between ice and skin.
    • Tylenol® (acetaminophen) may be used for discomfort.
    • Your provider may prescribe additional medications such as steroids to reduce swelling.

  • Heat & Temperature Extremes: Avoid saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs, and ice baths during early healing.

  • Contact the Office Immediately If You Experience: Severe redness, blistering, burns, persistent swelling, or any unexpected reaction.

  • Sun Protection: Avoid prolonged sun exposure for 1–2 weeks after treatment. Wear a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen daily and reapply as needed when outdoors to help prevent hyperpigmentation and protect healing skin.
